In August 1990, an unemployed French nuclear physicist named Andre Gardes attempted a single handed invasion of Sark armed with a semi automatic weapon. Sark is a small island in the Chanel Islands just off the the French coast of Normandy and is populated at about 600-800 people. The night Gardes arrived he put up signs declaring his intention to take over the island the following day at noon. He was arrested while sitting on a bench by the islands volunteer constable.
